Possible bug:
NPC hireling prefers to eat meat, cooked or raw, but will not eat fish, fruit, vegetables, bread, or cheese.
Also exhibits behavior of a tamed animal.

You can't feed them on OSI

Possible bug: Also exhibits behavior of a tamed animal.

They kind of behave like pets but you can't lore them on OSI. The context menu for them are almost similar except for the Release on pets and the Dismiss for hirelings
When you dismiss them you get this gump on OSI

Right.
NPCs absolutely should decline being given unsolicited sausage of any kind.
Since NPC hireling behavior is so similar to pet behavior, I wonder if NPC hirelings could be bonded as pets are given enough time and food.
Hireling stats seem to increase as pets do, according to recent Anatomy and Evaluating Intelligence queries, although Animal Lore cannot be used.

EDIT: NPC hireling also declines further coin to extend their contract, and again shies away like an animal.
