General Action Delay And Automation

Post by DG »

To this day,we have to acknowledge that automation of pvp is inevitable. However there is still something we can do on server side to reduce the effectiveness of automation.

Increasing general action delay to one second should be one.

The advantage of automation is speed.Machines are way faster than human beings. For example,if server allows no delay between potions, one can never use potions as fast as scripts do.If the delay is one second, the difference between by scripts and by hands is very small.Man can catch up with machines in this case. That is to say,the longer the action delay, the less advantage of scripts.

Furthermore, longer action delay will result in more automation errors. It will be much harder to write perfect scripts with longer action delay. The cost of a script error will be much higher too. When you wish to heal yourself as fast as possible, but your script automatically uses a bandage, you only need to wait half a second to chug a heal potion if the action delay is 0.5 second. No big deal. But if the delay is 1 second,it does make a noticeable difference. In the fast-paced pvp, every second matters.

If we are going to limit the effectiveness of automation,we should apply action delay to everything.Bands,scrolls,bolas,etc.Every action has an impact on pvp.If action delay is only applied to potions, the unfair advantage of scripts on other actions is still there.

People are talking about archer op for a long time.No matter archers are op or not, automation does give archers a big advantage.Scripts can make archer chug and band perfectly.Scripts almost do all the defensive things for archers.Increasing general action delay will weaken the power which archers receive from scripts.

One second general action delay is completely OSI accurate. There are considerations that increasing general action delay has a bad history and will affect pvm too much. But times have changed. We have long passed the era of razor when there were not so much automation.

you explained perfectly why pvp is not pvp anymore.... player versus player.... is not script versus script.. which is what demise pvp is anymore....

In my opinion, demise pvp is always involved with scripts.Even back to the days of razor, there were modded razor and other things. All powerful scripting platforms. The difference is,nowadays most players can get access to such platforms which only a few players could make use of before. From some perspective, pvp seems more fair.

It is very unlikely to ban these platforms today.CA ,RAE,UOS,etc. Most of them are open sourced.A few people will bypass the limitations eventually, which results in a more unfair pvp environment.Besides, people get used to such platforms.Pvmers will feel nothing to do if they can't macro hw runics.

We can't control it outside, but it doesn't mean we can't do it inside.Right server settings will reduce the effectiveness of scripts and make pvp less script based but more human based.

Well said, DG. One small change that should come in order to balance things on pvp scene.
